Artists as Researchers

Thursday, February 2nd, 2012

“Paintings are but research and experiment. I never do a painting as a work of art. All of them are researches.” (Pablo Picasso)

Can art making be a form of hands-on research? What can we learn from our experiments and explorations?

How can we discover new things about our themes and about ourselves through making art?

Working with Mentor Artist Brooke Toczylowski the Mural Team at Davidson has been researching – both the history of San Rafael and painting.  Toczylowski has studied Arts Based Research with Julia Marshall and Kimberley D’Adamo at San Francisco State University.

As they get ready to create the mural students are digging deep into both content and technique. Students use their art journals as a place to express, experiment, document, and learn.

To start their research the artists learned how to make a mind map in which they focused on what they already know about their chosen theme. For example, a student asks herself, “What do I already know about the Miwoks?” and “What do I want to know?”

Using resources from historical books, the internet, and oral histories from the Marin History Museum, students began their reading and researching. They created pages in their journals in which image and text intertwine and interact. Having such an open format allows them to make the content personal and relevant to their own lives.

In addition to historical research the artists are also experimenting with different paints and techniques. At the end of each session together students share what they’ve discovered support each other in their next steps.

Lines, shapes, colors, texture, and angles!

Tuesday, March 22nd, 2011

Mentor Artists Michelle Gutierrez worked with 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students at Lynwood Elementary school, in their aftershool time to create beautiful images learning the basics of photography. They learned the five basic techniques of composition which are: lines, shapes, colors, texture, and angles. Sixty students divided into two classes of one hour each to learn how to use digital cameras, upload their images, manipulate and archive them in Iphoto, and later-create a slide show presenting their work. They also learned how to create powerpoint presentations, using words to accompany their images on the Mac program Keynote.

The photos taken by the students will be used on the school’s website as a way to promote their school in addition to highlighting the hard work of the youth. Great job Lynwood students!

The Marine Mammal Center lands at the Twilight After School Program!

Monday, April 26th, 2010

Beautiful, mysterious, and magnificent, cetaceans (whales, dolphins, and porpoises) were the main topic during the visit from MMC. The Multi-purpose Room was transformed into a museum with real specimens such as bones, pelts and baleen. Second grade student, Fiona Nudd, was dressed up as whale to learn about anatomy and adaptations. This fun, interactive exhibit, presented by Barbara, also taught the kids about the bigger picture of caring for our marine environment.

Thank You Marine Mammal Center!

Twilight – ‘Til Dawn

Friday, April 16th, 2010

On April 7th ‘Til Dawn came to the Twilight After School Program and put on a beautiful concert. It was an exciting intra-agency event where our Youth in Arts teen a cappella group entertained our k-8 kids in the after school. Beatboxing, tight harmonies, great songs, and an authentic joy of singing all blended together to capture the attention of our Twilight students for a full 50 minutes. One Youth in Arts program enriching another!

Twilight After School Program hosts a West African teaching artist.

Tuesday, March 30th, 2010

Bongo, a visiting artist, had the kids drumming in polyrhythmic arrangements and singing Guinean songs in the after school program this last week. He was kind enough to load up his car and bring us his very own djembes. What a great treat for our kids to drum on quality instruments! And the music the kids produced was excellent. We hope he will be returning soon!

Alpha Oumar “Bongo” Sidibe is a traditional drummer from Conakry, Guinea in West Africa. He is Musical Director of Duniya Dance and Drum Company and founder of the band Wontanara. Bongo currently lives in San Francisco.

The talented and versitile actors played a wide range of funny and flawed characters and in the end left the great message that with positive collaboration we can do anything!

Thank You Marin Theatre Company!!

Girl Scouts visit the Twilight After School

Girl Scouts visit After School

During the month of March the Girl Scouts will be giving the young girls of the Twilight After School Program a special class. The Girl Scouts believe in developing qualities that will serve girls all their lives: leadership, social conscience, and conviction about their own potential and self-worth. In their first class they sang the Girl Scout anthem (some staff members even joined in!) then created a group mandala that taught them about collaborative art making.

It is community volunteers like Sheryl Graab, Girl Scout Leader, that help to make the after school program a fantastic place for our kids!
