Youth in Arts welcomes Lily Oglesby, Director of the Youth in Arts Presents Series. Lily has studied dance and theater for over 25 years and has been teaching both for over 15 years throughout the Bay Area. She studied ballet intensively at Milwaukee Ballet School and Pacific Northwest Ballet School in Seattle. As well, she studied modern, jazz, West African and Zimbabwean dance at Weselyan University in CT. She continued her dance studies after college at San Francisco Dance Center, Rhythm and Motion, ODC and other dance centers around the Bay. She studied theater in London at The Central School of Speech and Drama, at Wesleyan U. and at ACT in SF, where she also taught for 4 years in the Young Conservatory. She has also studied dance abroad in Ghana, Brazil, Spain and the Domincan Republic.
Lily currently teaches and choreographs at schools throughout Marin, including Roco, Marin Primary and Middle School, Belvedere-Tiburon Rec. Center and Sun Valley Elementary School. She was also the Green School Program Coordinator at Next Generation in San Rafael for the past two years and has taught environmental education for over ten years. She also continues to perform theater and dance throughout the Bay.
Through her dance classes Lily gives students a taste of many dance styles from ballet, jazz, modern, hip hop, musical theater, west African and Latin dance. Lily aims to inspire a love of dance in each student and cultivate each students’ own unique style.
Her theater classes focus primarily on improvisational theater techniques and theater games to expand each students awareness of themselves and others and empower students through cultivating a deeper self-understanding and freedom of creativity. More advanced classes incorporate different dramatic texts. As well, students are supported in developing there own theatrical written works.
