Sharing Voice: Mentor Artists and Students Explore Identity
ONLINE FUNDRAISER EVENT
Thursday, February 25 at 6:00pm
TICKETS $25
Who am I? Where do I belong? What role do I play? Young people ask many important questions as they discover and craft their identities and, at Youth in Arts, we believe fundamentally in the power of the arts to help students explore their identity and community. Now, as the arts face the particular challenges posed by the pandemic and as students grapple with the social and emotional impacts of learning in these times, Youth in Arts is renewing our commitment to our students and to our teaching artists, who are finding new and creative ways to reach young people.
In a 45-minute discussion, moderated by Aimee Espiritu, Mentor Artists Austin Willacy (Director of ‘Til Dawn, Youth in Arts), Shahrzad Khorsandi (Founder of the Shahrzad Dance Academy and Mentor Artist, Youth in Arts) and two of their long-time students, share their experience, discussing how the arts can help shape students’ sense of themselves, within an arts ensemble and in their broader communities. Drawing on their own arts practice – and sharing video examples of their work teaching, arranging and choreographing students — Willacy and Khorsandi explore ways of developing identity and community through the arts.
